Pathé News digital archive

Post by sporran » Sat Aug 26, 2006 4:23 pm

Hello all,

found in today's Times. The entire digital archive of Pathé News is available to download, with low resolution video being free. These short films date from 1910 to 1970 and were shown in cinemas in the UK.

The searching could be better and the need to give personal details to receive an e-mail linking to the film is tedious, but the films are fascinating.

The site is www.britishpathe.com

Regards,

John

Thanks for that one John.

I remember being able to view one during a kind of trial period. Unfortunately I cannot get one to run now. I'll keep trying.

Best wishes,
Annette

To see an interesting genealogy-related movie clip (with sound), on the Pathé News website (address in the initial post above), search for register house and select the result for "Somerset House". You will se a clip of a mother registering a birth with her local registrar, then some time later, going to Somerset House (the former London equivalent of New Register House) and carrying out a search for that certificate, followed by the procedure of having an extract typed up. I think the costs were 1/- for the search and 2/7 for the extract. The clip is dated 1937.

A search on the Pathé site for New Register House produces two results that were of no relevance that I could make out.

All the best,

AndrewP

The ITN website also allows you to view the Pathe archives, as well as other collections they own. This seems to have a more straightforward procedure for viewing.
