one tree world

Post by laineywoo » Mon Sep 04, 2006 11:27 pm

Can I just ask if anyone has entered any of their family tree onto this? and was it worthwhile?
I see it so often now I am beginning to wonder if it is worth giving it a go. At least I know my own entries are accurate.
What do you all think?

I'd be interested to what what people's opinions on this are too. I remember submitting my tree on ancestry then being a bit annoyed that I had to pay to view other trees. I promptly wiped my tree from the system as I was not happy about anyone making money off the back of my own research.

Well I have been extremely lucky with this one.I do have an annual subscription to One World tree-to keep the connection live.
I was initially sceptical but have connected with about five other members of my family-unusual name & very good Parish Records have aided the search.
I have been able to add to my tree & to find some fairly close relatives that I was totally unaware of.
I have also been able to correct some mistakes in other trees which was pretty thrilling for me as I can remember making similiar mistakes when I started out!

ONE TREE WORLD

Hi Rab and Joette
That is really interesting Joette. I was kind of scared that others would just take the info and not make contact [sure some will], but nice to hear a positive result. Can you tell me how much you have to pay to keep it going?
I think when I was given my family tree maker there was a freebie with it for this..........not sure if it is still active as I was so skeptical at the time. Would like to hear more about it still before going ahead

Do you know I can't remember but I think it was something like £19 per annum.I'm sure it wouldn't be more because I am a bit reluctant to pay for sharing my info but!!!

one tree world

Hi Joette
Decided to give this a go just to see if anyone does get in touch! Could you tell me, did you keep your tree public or private? How much info did you enter for each person? Did you enter all the cert details of dates and places or hold anything back? Not finding it easy to navigate my way around this one at all, I think it would be more helpful to have another persons views before I go further.
Many thanks

As far as I remember I entered everything & it automatically does not show the living members of the family.I am still working on it & it is a bit difficult to navigate.I started with me & worked backwards. It shows my Dad who is dead but not my Mum who isn't.
I made my tree public as I have done the research & I am happy to share most of it!

I too have always been reluctant to upload my tree to sites that charge to look at them. But I recently joined Genes Reunited and uploaded my ged file. The thing I like about that site is that I choose to allow others to see my tree, it is not up to the site. I have had a few queries since I joined and some have let each other look at our trees. Others with no matches dont bother. I realise it is not the site on this thread but just thought I would mention it. Oh and I can stop anyone I previously gave permission to look at my tree with the click of a box.

One more thing, at least this site does have hotmatches, ok most are not linked, but better than another site that started off free then started charging. I the two years I was in that site I didnt get even one match

Hi Stewie

I agree with you on that. It's good to have some control over who accesses your information.
I've been on Genes Re for about a year and have had 20-25 contacts so it has been worthwhile.
Most have added side branches to our tree and at least three have discovered flaws in their own research and had to backtrack because they have realised from our entries that they have not actually been related.
Even though we have gained little actual info from it, helping others (much like TS) has been enjoyable.
We are seriously thinking of not renewing Genes because of the financial aspect. Why should others profit from the information which is freely given.
When the Hotmatches list comes in, if they cannot link at least two names by date and location we just delete.
TS is doing just as good a job of linking people in a more accessible way and with a lot more fun too :!:

Hi Russell

I only just joined Genes Re last month. Good idea about the one name matches might just save me a lot of time looking. I did get a 5 name match however. But it was from my third cousin's wife I already have contact with  So we already had each others trees. They also live here in the west of oz.
