Eejit requires IGI assistance please

Post by Jockbird » Tue Sep 05, 2006 10:33 pm

Evening!

I am probably being a right numpty, I've been applying all these wonderful new searches that I've been reading about on here, the umpteen children for a 1 credit OPR search, I've wildcarded like I've never wildcarded before but I've come to an almighty standstill with this one.

I've gone in on the IGI parent search for George Elder & Ann Stuart, I've found their 9 children which, despite being member entries, actually matches the OPRs I've got and I then went to try and find the details of the submitter because their list has quite a few more Elders that I'd like to ask them about.

I've read the thread, sorry can't remember off hand whose it was  , followed it what I thought was religiously and couldn't find the bit with the details of the submitter. :?

Could anyone please help and have a wee double check for me to see if such a thing even exists on this record.

Thank you!

Donna

Donna

I await the replies to this one with interest as I've got the same problem myself.

Not that it will help anyone looking for a submitter but FWIW it seems to lead to a dead end sometimes BUT did work once for me and I found a cousin. I posted a similar query a year or so ago which, very suspiciously, no one answered!

We can but hope that somewhere someone has got to grips with the batch and sheet nos. and how to proceed.

Good hunting,

Thrall

Hi all
I don't know the definitve answer to this one, but just noticed from my own observations: sometimes submitters names are mentioned...and sometimes they are not! Don't know why - maybe they have the option? Maybe a visit to your local LDS centre might be of some help? They must know how it all works!!

Best wishes
Lesley

The only place I found where I could get submitters details was if a record showed up in the Ancestral File section. If it does there is a link near the bottom right "Details". Click on that and the list of people who have submitted to that ancestal file are shown.

Hi Donna

Were these the children you found?
WILLIAM ELDER Male Christening: 17 AUG 1774 Alvah, Banff, Scotland
WALTER ELDER Male Christening: 30 MAR 1787 Fordyce, Banff, Scotland
JAMES ELDER Male Christening: 17 JUN 1777 Deskford, Banff, Scotland
ISABEL ELDER - Female Christening: 03 NOV 1789 Fordyce, Banff, Scotland
JEAN ELDER - Female Christening: 16 JUN 1792 Fordyce, Banff, Scotland
MARY ELDER Female Christening: 02 MAR 1776 Deskford, Banff, Scotland
WILLIAM ELDER Male Christening: 10 MAY 1784 Fordyce, Banff, Scotland
WILLIAM ELDER Male Christening: 18 JUL 1784 Fordyce, Banff, Scotland
GEORGE ELDER Male Birth: 07 AUG 1779 Deskford, Banff, Scotland
GEORGE ELDER Male Christening: 08 AUG 1779 Deskford, Banff, Scotland
Batch 7508409/7431226
Only the second william was an extract - C111532
The rest were all from 2 batch numbers which are gathered differently from submitted entries. I think volunteers scan the OPR films and generate batches whereas submissions can be from actual family trees which have been submitted by researchers.
Batches appear to be anonymous entries owned by the LDS.
Only submitted entries appear to have names given for the person placing the entry. You need to look at the date the entry was made as some can be years ago. Not all submitters give details of how they can be contacted.
Hope this goes some way to nswering your question.

I found a submitted entry for a Janet Graham in IGI alongside a Grace Graham when doing a parent search for William Graham and Elisabeth Robertson. Janet was my great grandmother (paternal). Only recently did include Grace in my line as they were both submitted. Until I found Grace and two more siblings in the 1851 census. Unfortunately I can find no trace of the submitter, all it says is that it was submitted prior to 1999. I tried to find an ancestral file but no luck there. Looks like it is a bit of pot luck even finding a submitter, let alone contact them after all this time. :(

Yes I cannot find a suitable answer to this either.I have been given conflicting answers from the FHC but what I have worked out is that because of Privacy reasons some people are reluctant to give their contact details or the Church is reluctant to now include them.
Many of the submissions are years old(some of mine date back to the 1920's).I did give contact details for myself but they are not there(out of date anyway!)on my submissions.
I usually just click on the details & if their is a name/s then click on the batch no & just add the surname I am looking for or if I am looking for more than one leave it blank & just work through the names & occasionally you find what you are not looking for.

I was told by a cousin who is LDS that only members can find out the details of other members (who have not posted their contact information). In fact, I seem to recall that he had to ask his sister to order the film from the underground facility in Salt Lake City and go to the library there to get the info, even he couldn't access it from out of state.
