Griffiths Valuations

Post by emanday » Thu Sep 07, 2006 1:59 pm

I decided not to put this in the Ireland section as so many of us have Irish ancestors, but I leave it to Admin to judge best location...

Just got this email from Ulster Ancestry..
Free Ancestor Search now on line.

All family history research in Ireland starts with Griffith’s Valuation

The Primary Valuation of Ireland, 1848-1864, gives a complete list of occupiers of land, tenements and houses. Better known as Griffith's Valuation, it is arranged by counties and within counties by Poor Law Union Divisions and within Unions by barony and then by parish and townland.

You can now search the Valuation for all 9 Ulster Counties for Free at http://www.ulsterancestry.com/search.html

Good luck and good hunting!
The Monoghan tables seem to be having a problem, but the other counties seem to be OK.

Hi Emanday

Thanks for the information on this Site.

However, I am not familiar with Griffiths Evaluation.
I have found several names that could possibly be the ancestors that I am searching for, but because the name is so common I can't be sure.

Do they just list the man's name, or do they list all the people in a household like the census does?

Thanks

Sheila

Hi Shiela,

All it lists is the surname, firstnames in alphabetical order, Townland, Parish and County.

I don't know if it only has the head of the household listed, I think it is just them. However, if your people were around between 1845-1864 it might at least give you a pointer.

Like Sheila, I have looked at the GE and I find myself wondering if people listed there ARE my lot...so hard to know for sure. And although it is a complete list, so they say, I can't find many of my ancestoral surnames listed.

So I usually just copy some stuff down and move on, and I don't follow it up because I am just not SURE if the ancestor is mine or not,

I find it frustrating! But then I am not the first to be disheartened by Irish research.

Apologies if this site has already been posted, but it has Griffiths for all of Ireland - not just Ulster.

Thanks Barbara. A much wider choice which is great as I have someone who wasn't from Ulster.

Hi Mary

My problem is that there are so many people who could be my lot. I have a lot of Boyds in my ancestry, and there seem to be a lot of them in Northern Ireland. :?

Regards
