Going to Kew in November...

Post by tishgibbons » Thu Sep 21, 2006 9:24 pm

Hi Folks,

I am going to London in November for a family occassion and have managed to wangle a full day which I intend to spend in the National Archives in Kew. This will be my first time to visit and I want to make the best use of my time. I think somewhere on this site there is a page with hints and necessary info but I can't find it. Where is it? And could anyone who has been there advise me on how to get the best out of a short visit - which I might not get to do again for a few years?

In grateful anticipation (as ever)

Thanks Tracey,

I took a look at those. They're helpful in a formal way but like you I don't want to waste the precious time. Hoping someone here will give us both a few tips as to what we can and can't get. I'm particularly interested in military service records, prisoner of war, campaign medals, etc. and of course any logical way of looking for those who disappeared off the face of the earth in so far as I can't find them on-line anywhere after 1901 or before it.

TNA site is very helpful if you can navigate round it. Most of the time what you need is buried so far in you can never find it again. I have printed off reference numbers and where i will find certain records for Military, Maritime ect and what they do and dont hold........I think if you can spend the time doing that it will help when you get there and thats why i havnt got there yet ! One thing i am told is that sometimes, not always, there is a long wait for what youve asked to look at.
Someone on here did go not so long ago but i cant think who it was

I know its a bore but

Tracey

I think it was perhaps AnneM who went to Kew. She talked about it one one of her posts.
