LDS British Vital Records 2nd Edition Problem

Post by emanday » Thu Oct 05, 2006 7:53 pm

Some months ago I invested in this set and was perfectly happy with it - UNTIL...

I'd never had any need to use the CD number 6 before and popped it in at the prompt to do so. The viewer immediately froze and I eventually had to shut it down.

All the other discs still worked fine but I decided to reinstall the viewer in case it had a problem (I uninstalled the existing one first).
Install done, popped in a CD and was immediately informed that I needed to upgrade to Version 4.02 of the viewer. The version now said 4.0.4. ?but I installed from the same disc - why did the version change?

I decided to use Restore and return my PC to where it had been before, contacted LDS who promised to send me a replacement. Now I thought they'd replace CD 6 and maybe the viewer installation disc. What I got was another complete set!

Wowee, do I hear you say. Hold your water folks - CD 6 on this set doesn't work either on my existing viewer installation and, when I reinstalled using the new disc, guess what message I got? "Need to upgrade to Version 4.02".

Restored my PC again so that I could continue to use my other LDS CD's, contacted LDS again about this same problem with a brand spanking new set.

Am I right to feel paranoid  , or has anyone else had this problem?

Hi Mary,

I gave Disc 6 a try and it works fine for me...I'm afraid I haven't a clue what the problem could be with the discs you have! Is there anything in particular you're looking for?

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Mary,

My genealogy club purchased the British Vital Records and had the same problem. They took the 4.02 viewer from one of the American Vital Record sets they had purchased, made a copy of it and the British set now works fine.

What we don't understand is why when you purchase the set the viewer they send you is only a 4.0, when you really need a 4.02 viewer??

That's the strange thing, Ina. When I first installed the viewer, it DID install V4.02. It's only when I try to reinstall it from that same disc or from the new disc that V4.0.4 gets installed.

That's why I had to do a restore to get back to the previous installation.

I've been in IT for more years than I care to count and never seen this happen before.

I'm just wondering if, the very first time you install the viewer, does it check the version with LDS online and install the latest version from their site? Once done, something is left on the PC that prevents this happening again when reinstalling.

While it was very nice of them to replace the whole set, can't help wondering why they didn't check that this new set didn't have the same problem with CD 6 (which is what started this whole saga).

Hi Anne H,

My research is trying to sort out some Hamiltons and some Irelands, but with only one Hamilton and two Irelands to start on, I'd planned on "winging it" if you know what I mean.

Martha Hamilton, father Robert (Mum unnamed) married James Bonner, my GG Grandfather, in Urney, Tyrone, Ireland on 29 November 1852. I'm hoping to follow that Hamilton line back.

Also, Anne Ireland, father Solomon, married James Stewart, my GG Grandfather, in Belfast on 20 Oct 1845. Typical of those Irish records, her mother isn't named on either her baptism or marriage either.

Doing a bit of trawling on the IGI can be very slow, even with my broadband. That's why I bought the discs.

I've tried all the solution relevant to Win XP suggested on that first link, David. However, am going to give the suggestion on the 2nd link a try.

Will let you know.

Hi Mary,

I was just about to send you a pm with an attachment but don’t know how to send the attachment. If you want to pm me with your email address I’ll send you the attachment with all of the Martha Hamilton births and also those broken down for Martha with father Robert for the whole of Britain. It’s in PDF form so hopefully you will be able to open it. I expect you know from her marriage her middle name is Jane, so maybe that’s a clue to keep in mind.

I also have all Anne Ireland births but I didn’t see anything with father Solomon. I couldn’t find her marriage to James Stewart.

I’m in the middle of a big work project at the moment so didn’t have much time to really have a good look but hope the information at least gives you a start until you can sort out the problem with your disc. Have to dash off now.

Regards,
Anne H
