Hi all,
Have any of our members heard of a publication called the Northern Figaro?
By all accounts it was very similar to the Glasgow Baillie.
I think it was on the go from 1884.
There was an article regarding the police receiving an inoculation against some bug.
A wag had replied stating.
“What do they need that for? They couldn’t catch anything”
I am interested in this periodical, as it has several articles on the music hall acts of the time.
It appears that when the touring troupes came up from England, not only did they do Glasgow but several other cities in Scotland as well.
Any help would be appreciated as there is not much on the Web

Even if it was considered a lesser paper in its day, I would expect that information on when and where it was published would be available from the Mitchell, or any other local library reference/information department.
I know of at least 2 publications of that type are available for Canadian and American newspapers and magazines. These same books identify existing collections, and if any copies do exist, a reference as to which library/archive holds them and in what format.
Hope this leads you to an answer,
Frances

Hi all
Have just purchased the Figaro from 1884-1887.
A good insight to life in Aberdeen in the late nineteenth century
On a few of the cartoons of the meenisters they also show their Kirk.
I have put the first page of the Christmas (Christmas 1884) edition in the gallery along with the caricature of Rev Samuel Clark. http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... p?pos=-912

The good thing about having the paper at these particular dates is that most of the cartoons, contributors and the people they are writing about can be traced on the 1881 census.

I am cataloguing the cartoons and some of the articles at the moment.
Here are a list of some of them from the first year, in case someone recognises a name.
Rev. A.M Bannatyne, Rev. C.C. Macdonald, Mr Oswald Prosser, Baillie George Walker, Sheriff J. Dove Wilson, Professor Milligan, Professor Ogston, Mr Thomas Wyness, Mr Alexander Cook jnr, Rev. J.M. Danson, Baillie Pyper, Professor Minto, Dr F.M. Moir, Mr Andrew Stott, Rev. J. Mitford Mitchell.
There are well over 100 cartoons of the great and good.
Hope it is of some interest to our NE members

Davie,
great find! Any harm to ask where you sourced it - wouldn't mind a look. My lot won't have been amongst the great and the good - probably quite the reverse but you never know...

Davie,
Sorry, I just assumed you found something on-line. The originals - that's great! Could indeed by in Belfast on the 25th but don't expect you to lug that stuff over here!

Again Tish,
I should be over for at least a week.
Hope to visit faimily an' freens in Bangor, Newry and cross the border intae Dundalk.
Will be more than happy tae bring a volume ower fawr yer perusal.
These wee papers gie ye a wee aspect o' lfe at the time.
I copied oot a wee snippet frae the Figaro, December 26th 1885
It is questionable whether the practice of sending complementary cards
at Christmas time will continue much longer. The idea originated suddenly and took rapidly. If it were only to personal friends residing at a distance the cards were sent it would be all very well, but when it becomes necessary to drop a reminder to all one’s acquaintances whom he (a more properly she) is meeting every day the custom becomes a social nuisance, and so must perish.
So much for their prediction eh?
