Re Mitchell Library - odd name!

Post by Jack » Sat Dec 30, 2006 1:12 pm

Hi Maggie,
I had to return to the Mitchell yesterday to check the writing on a Poor Relief page,
and whilst there i couldn't resist a quick peek at the odd name you'd noticed with the Wilson family.
Well it wasn't a transcription error!

1851 census 622 (579) Ed 14 p 1 (Anderston)
105 Stobcross St.
Mount Gumara Wallace, visitor, widower, 60, gardener rtd. kept by relative, b Pollokshaws, RFW
--
Montgomerie Wallace, b.1788 Eastwood Parish - that could well be him!

Hi Maggie,

On www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk there is a death for a 69 year old Montgomerie Wallace in 1858 in Springburn. I would be surprised if they are not one and the same.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew,
I've misled you somewhat - sorry!
Maggie was searching for her Wilson family, and pointed out to me the odd name beside them in the index.
The Wilson family are probably the wrong one - and so more than likely no relation.
The name intrigued me - i just couldn't believe Mount Gumara was anything else but a transcription error.
Especially with the surname Wallace.
How wrong i was!
Thanks, Jack :D

Hi Jack,

I am sure Maggie has a challenge on her hands seeking out the right Wilsons from the many. She probably wishes they had first names like Montgomerie.

All the best,

AndrewP

Enjoyed it masel,
Wance again bein’ able tae pitt faces tae names.
Jack, ah knew ‘, but wull lee his face oot o’ it fawr noo.
Ah had been in toon and wiz drappin’ some books aff at the Glasgow Room, so stuck ma nose in upsters tae see if oanywan wiz aboot.
I joined Jack at his table and we began a gab, when this blonde lassie comes over and introduces herself.
None other than, Pamela Anderson.
Well, ah might no huve heard correctly, It might huve been Pamela frae Anderson.
Miss Poohs or Janice tae yoose.
It wiz interesting how we met up wey Maggie.
As we were still gabbing away and ther wiz only wan other person oan the fisch thingys.
And as we wurr the only ither punters ther, didnae need keep the voices doon much.
When ah take visitors tae Glesga up tae the Glasgow Room, they come away thinkin’ ma name is Davie Shhh.
Maggie heard me mentioning my name and told us that was the family she wiz researching.
That surprised me, as Shhh is an unusual surname.
It transpired the Maggie and I had been exchanging information a year or so back.
So that wiz guid.
I hear the plaintive voices of grandchildren calling.
“Get off our computer Auld Yin”
Hey Ho
Awrabest

Hi Maggie,
We're glad you did hear us blethering!
The mention of McNaughtan was what did it.
And if you hadn't come over, i would probably never have known about "Mount Gumara"!

Maybe post some of your Wilson problems on TS?
I know it's a difficult name to search - therr's thoosands oot therr!
But someone may be able to give you some advice on them.
Cheers,
Jack
ps, you're right Andrew - and a few Montgomerie forenames in any family would be welcome. :D
