Spences of Linthigow.....

Post by angel » Tue Jan 02, 2007 4:29 pm

Hello Everyone

On tidying up my desk I found a paper on which someone had gave some information on it they say that they knew Linlithgow as thier mother was brought up there.

The intersting part is I quote " I followed up the Spences in Linlithgow, as it is an unsual name for that area. I think the rioting Edward Spence shows up on familysearch; and there are Quiete a few results spread back into the early 17th century." end quote.

In NAS there is a paper for Edward about bankruptcy also It would look like that any Spences in Linthigow belong to me.

All I have to do now is find out who Mary was.

Hi Heather,
Been meaning to respond to this one. Did you post something a while back talking about the Spences being shoemakers, or am I thinking of another name?

Anyway, it's good to meet somebody else looking at Linlithgow people! Any other names from there?

Jenny

Oops, I see that you did, recently, a whole thread, and I missed it... as I recall, one of the houses in Linlithgow main street has a connection with Spence as shoemakers (but my head is full of cottonwool from flu and I could be mis-remembering). Linlithgow had a lot of leatherworkers - there is an excellent small museum with a display about the trade.

One of my ancestors was a shoemaker, in Linlithgow Bridge, but he seems to have learned his trade away from home in Old Monkland parish, then returned.

There's an online map of Linlithgow which gives the names of some of the householders, around the right date for your people - I've found McCulloch premise there. I will look out the url...

Online map is at http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/towns.cfm?id=379

There are several Spence premises, on the part of the high street heading west (shown as 'down' here) from the palace towards Linlithgow Bridge. The map is from 1820 or a little before. There are a couple of Spence properties backing onto the Loch (Mrs Spence and Bailie Spence) with opposite them two more Spence properties and also a Spencer. A bit further into the town there is another Spence property, on the loch side of the High Street.

(The McCulloch property is just the other side of the entry to St Michael's and the palace, and is probably that of Robert McCulloch, a merchant, brother of my g-g-g-g-grandfather William.)

Hope this is interesting!

Hi Jenny,

Thank you for bringing that particular map to my attention. I have a feeling those Miller's and Brown's living on the High Street will be some of mine. I think I'll be making another purchase. Thanks again. :)

Regards,
Anne H
