Just found this quite interesting site. They are compiling a database of surname locations, currently for years 1881 and 1998. They freely admit they have a long way to go yet, but I found it quite good for a couple of my lot.

Thanks for that Tracey. David's posting about it is right about the "origins" they have come up with and I did take them with a pinch of salt.
However, I think it is interesting to see how the distribution of surnames have changed in the 117 years between the databases used. One of my ancestral surnames has either not been entered for the 1998 yet, or they have all died out!
