Hi Donna

IGI cuts off at 1875 for extracted entries. There may be submitted entries after this (I think I've seen some anyway :? ) but you won't find a birth from 1883. Gotta go to SP for that and pay pay pay

Best wishes
Jean

Thanks Just Jean - I wasn't aware of that - but now that gives me 20+ records on SP to check out.

The joys of it all

Hmmmm.....not certain if they are listed chronologically.....perhaps they are if you are only search one parish and one year at a time....but for example you can still "guesstimate" where in the year the record was made by noting all the choices and noting the GROS number after the Parish number. This number reflects the number of the record and I believe each year started with 1......(this is not coming out the way I hoped  ) Hold on a sec..... here's an example....

The other day I was searching for Ann Sutherland born in Caithness and I knew from the IGI the record I wanted to view had her birth recorded in August of that year...but in case it wasn't the one I thought it should be then I also wanted to have all the others available to choose from within a range of years........here are the search results that came up on SP and the one I've made bold is my first guess at the one born in August in 1857. Not bragging but I was right first try.... So guess based on the 4 digit number after the 038/00 parish number. I looked at the other numbers recorded in 1857 and took a chance I was somewhere in the middle of the range.

4 1855 SUTHERLAND ANN F LATHERON /CAITHNESS 038/00 0075 VIEW (5 CREDITS) ORDER
5 1855 SUTHERLAND ANN F LATHERON /CAITHNESS 038/00 0013 VIEW (5 CREDITS) ORDER

12 1859 SUTHERLAND ANN F LATHERON /CAITHNESS 038/00 0208 VIEW (5 CREDITS) ORDER
13 1860 SUTHERLAND ANN F LATHERON /CAITHNESS 038/00 0042 VIEW (5 CREDITS) ORDER
14 1860 SUTHERLAND ANN F LATHERON /CAITHNESS 038/00 0216 VIEW (5 CREDITS) ORDER
15 1859 SUTHERLAND ANN MCLEOD F LATHERON /CAITHNESS 038/00 0001 VIEW (5 CREDITS) ORDER
16 1858 SUTHERLAND MARY ANN F LATHERON /CAITHNESS 038/00 0173 VIEW (5 CREDITS) ORDER
17 1858 SUTHERLAND MARY ANN F LATHERON /CAITHNESS 038/00 0169 VIEW (5 CREDITS) ORDER
18 1860 SUTHERLAND MARY ANN F LATHERON /CAITHNESS 038/00 0227 VIEW (5 CREDITS) ORDER
19 1859 SUTHERLAND MARY ANN SINCLA F LATHERON /CAITHNESS 038/00 0236 VIEW (5 CREDITS) ORDER

Is this making more sense now????

Probably not.... There's a reason why I don't write directions for a living.....

Best wishes

Benhar

Post by grannysrock » Tue Jan 16, 2007 11:36 pm

Hi Donna

I agree with Jean they wont be in date order. But I'm wondering about your East Benhar. I remember a Benhar from my younger days in Scotland. I believe it was between Whitburn and Harthill roughly , that would make it either West Lothian or Lanarkshire.

I just thought of llooking up East Benhar on the free place name search on www.scotsorigins.com - it has a East Benhar in Fauldhouse, West Lothian - that would be about right from my memory. There are also Benhar related addresses in nearby parishes of Whitburn, Shotts and Calderhead.

Does that help or were you only searching in those areas anyway ?
Cheers

Some of the other members of the family were born in Shotts....maybe something to check.

Thanks for your help

Hi Donna,

On the ScotlandsPeople index, there's an Alexander Reid born in Fauldhouse registration district in 1883. Given the information that various Benhar addresses were in that part of the country, I would put that one to the top of the list for checking.

All the best,

AndrewP
