N A S So Slow

Post by Jamboesque » Mon Jan 22, 2007 11:15 am

Hi Folks,

Does anyone else have problems using the National Archives for Scotland (NAS) online search facility at http://www.dswebhosting.info/NAS/dserve ... =Index.tcl

I’m trying to find out more about my relly Thomas Trotter (1843-1905) who was a Schoolteacher in Arbuthnott from Approx. 1861 – 1877 when he moved to Leith to become Head Teacher /Master at North Fort St. School. His son Frank J Totter (1874 – 1932) went on to become Chief Education Officer for Edinburgh.

I’m finding that the search facility so slow, its like ‘I’ll-go-away-and-make-a-cup-of-tea-and-maybe-the-search-will-be-finished-when-I-come-back’ sort of slow, or the system times out either way it's most frustrating. I’ve checked the ‘Sort Fields’ box OK as per the Help section and entered ‘Trotter’ and ‘Thomas’ in the AnyText box and say 1860-1865 into the date box.

I’ve run the search from both at home and at work and it is not dependant on location.

Any ideas, anyone? :?
I'd like to be apathetic but I really can't be bothered.

Looking for blacksheep & not finding any with
Groats & Stevensons in Orkney, Hood's in Dundee/Angus, Mclaren's in Clackmannan and Jolly's in Kincardineshire. There may be more!

Never mind that there isn't a wee twiddly icon thingy that indicates that the site is actively dealing with the request ................. as is the case with the search function on the TNA catalogue !!

Hi Jamboesque

All the time....
....it is never what you'd call fast, it just does degrees of slowness, from "aw, come on...." to (as you have already experienced) " I’ll-go-away-and-make-a-cup-of-tea-and-maybe-the-search-will-be-finished-when-I-come-back".
I usually seach NAS whilst doing some other PC based task to save wasting time.

It is even like that on the PCs at NAS....

Best wishes
Lesley
