United Free Church.....

Post by Morag » Tue May 03, 2005 10:10 am

Hi everyone

This is my first post here , although I have been visiting for a while .
I was wondering if anyone knew of any records for the United Free Church of Scotland. I have a couple, Angus MacNeill and Alexanderina Ross who married in 1843 , I have found some of the children born before 1855 on census returns but there may be more. They appear to have moved around the Western Isles . Between 1844-1858 they were in Tiree , moved to Stornoway, and also Portree. Angus was listed as a Gaelic teacher and a catechist , and one of the sons became a United Free Church Minister in Tongue.
I would appreciate any help on this
Thank you

The United Free Church was only formed in 1892 by the amalgamation of the Free Kirk and the United Prebyterian Church (itself formed in 1847 by the merger of the United Secession and Relief (aka 2nd Secession) Church), so it looks like you need the Free Kirk records.

Where these are extant they are mostly held by National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh, - there is now a good index on-line at http://www.dswebhosting.info/nas/ , but where records are held elsewhere, NAS should be able to advise you, - see http://www.nas.gov.uk/services_to_researchers.htm for contact details - via the "Contact Us" button.

As yet, the Free Kirk parish registers and sessional records are unindexed, but there is a digitisation and indexing project on the go, but it will take several years to produce results.

Hi Morag,

This page gives an idea about the divisions of the Scottish Churches.

Yes, rather confusing at times! Jack
