Post by Wendy » Tue May 03, 2005 4:33 pm

Hello,
Have been searching up a storm on Scotland people site and have many certs.....but have a question..
will the OPR give me the parents of both the bride and groom...????

I have been looking for William Anderson's and Janet Gilespie's parents for years and now have to send for the info...William and Janet were married 26 December 1806 Lochmaben and the GROS number is 840/00 0001 would anyone have access to it so I can finally know who the parents ..if they are listed ...may be....?????

In the OPRs, it is only a small minority the name the couple's parents. If their names are there, regard it as a bonus.

More commonly it will be only one sentence, something like "31st July 1806, James White and Helen Black gave their names in order to be married". So this was a record of the proclamation of the banns, rather than a record that the marriage took place. Some are followed by something like "and were married on 8th August."

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

See Andrew's answer above.

Have you tried looking for their deaths, - 1855 or later?, but that means that one or both would have had to survive into their 70s.......

The other chance worth looking into is the 1841 and 1851 censuses, - in a reasonable number of entries there will be someone over and above Maw, Paw, and the wains.

If they died prior to 1855 and you're certain that Lochmaben was involved then there's an outside chance of a record in the kirk session along the lines of ".........son of.....".

Can't recall if you've mentioned the status of the family involved, but it's always a worth a check on www.scottishdocuments.com for a testament (will), only about 1 in 20 Scots left a testament that appears in the records via the confirmation process, but not just rich people.

And there's newspaper obituaries, - however lowly the status might have been, if they were well known in the area then there's a chance of a mention.

That should keep you going for a while.

Hello Wendy

It might be worth your while visiting your local LDS history centre and ordering the film and having a good look yourself. Sometimes an odd bit of extra information is there on the OPR record e.g. name of a parent or place either of them lived. Not only will you see their marriage but also any other births, marriages that took place in your family in the same area. At £2.70. (about 6.4 Canadian dollars) a film, it's a bargain!

Hello Wendy,

I had a look at the OPR entry today at The Mitchell Library and I am afraid it tells you nothing you don't already know:

William ANDERSON and Janet GILLESPIE both of this Parish (then a bit about the banns) married 26th December, no objections.

regards,
Annette M
