marriage record on IGI doesn't appear on SP OPR index.....

Post by malcatgala » Wed Feb 07, 2007 7:55 pm

I have a puzzle. On the IGI, I found a marriage of Robert Balintine and Agnes Davidson in March 1811 in Dalserf Parish, Lanark. This fitted very well with previous info about this family. I entered SP expecting to find the OPR entry easily. However have tried it all ways (husband first, wife first, various spellings, Soundex off and on, expansion of dates to 10yrs either side, extension to all Lanark parishes...and I cannot find it! :?:
Does anyone have an explanation? Is it likely to be an indexing blip on SP?
Thanks
Malcolm

Hi Malcolm

I'm not 100 % certain but this is what I believe the case is here. First off note that the entry from the IGI that you found in 1811 for BALINTINE/DAVIDESON is not taken from an actual OPR source. The data is noted as being submitted by an LDS member. This can mean that the information might be known only from a family source (bible entry for example) but might not be extant in the OPRs that survive. That said I'm off to have a right good seach in the OPR indexes (but sounds like you've already attempted this!!) Soo....in essence.....the entry may not exist.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Malcolm

I'm back....and sorry no good news to report. Not only do the indexes not include any entry that could possibly be yours....in my extreme wildcard searching I managed to stumble onto this entry:

11/08/1811 HAMILTON ROBERT MARY MUTTER/FR108 M Dalserf /LANARK 638/ 0010 0202

and knowing that this couldn't be more than a page or 2 from the portion that would have included 6 March 1811 I worked backward in the pages. The portion of the proclamations from Dalserf parish that include the date stated in the IGI does not have an entry for Robert and Agnes....and not even anything that comes close to their names or the exact date. Sooooo....that settles that.

Another thought I've had in the meantime though...perhaps they were married outside the Church of Scotland? Perhaps the answer lies in another denomination of which records are not available.....or at least not online.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean...and thanks very much for that helpful reply.
I've enough of this family's ancestry for the lack of an OPR entry not to be a problem, so I'm not stymied...... and I'm also now much better informed about possible IGI sources.
Thanks again Malcolm :)
