OPR Lottery.....

Post by Davie » Wed Mar 07, 2007 10:36 pm

Hi All,
After popping several records from SP’s recently added OPR.
I am discovering that it is a bit of a lottery, regarding what you get for your £1.
The one added to the Gallery “Glasgow 1824” is certainly of interest to me, as it shows my Family (McFarlane's) having been wed by a Relief Minister.
Plus a couple married by a Burgher. (hope ah got the spelling right)

Has anyone else come up with a similar page?
I notice that one or two other members have had a similar experience.
Looking forward to seeing a few more oddities.
Davie

Interesting, Davie!
You don't by any chance have a Michael Bogle McFarlane in your tree, do you? I came upon him the other day, mediating (in Glasgow) between my 3rd great grandfather and his estranged wife, who were disputing the aliment payments in 1817
Regards,
Sarah

Well, my older son (a wild party guy) just spent Carnival in Rio... and seems to have come back in one piece. Otherwise, those two girls baptized on the ship were my... :-k gg grandmother's half brother's first wife's daughters from her first marriage  So, a close connection
Thanks for asking :D

Hi Davie,

There are a number of notable items to pick out from that page you uploaded to the gallery.

Two of the men of professional standing (a merchant and a writer) both had their brides referreed to as L.D. of ..., presumably lawful daughter. Was this showing that their brides were of reputable background?

The number of references to ministers of other churches shows that this session clerk recorded more than the marriages of the parish church. On saying that, it does look like all of the other ministers were Church of Scotland (or varieties of), none from other Churches.

Three of them name the couples, but no sign of the marriage having taken place. Are these ones where the banns were proclaimed and the marriage never took place?

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Davie,

I haven't noticed any being married by a Relief Minister but I have come across others being married by a Burgher. I've also seen reference to the LS and LD (lawful son/daughter) that Andrew mentioned.

You're right though, it is a bit of a lottery as to what you get, but for me, they're all well worth the money. Some simply state that they were married or "gave of their names", but I've also had a few little bits and pieces that add a little more to the story, like dues they paid, the three dates their banns were called, when married and date marriage registered that was on one of my Linlithgow marriages, confirmation of occupation, parents, witnessess, etc., Of course, I've also had a couple that have given me more questions than answers, but I love them all.

Regards,
Anne H
