Janet Calderwood-birth or census .....

Post by angel » Mon May 16, 2005 7:46 pm

Hi

I am looking for the birth of my 2 x great grandmother Janet Calderwood c1847 from Glasgow. She married Robert Swan 12 August 1838 so even an 1841 census lookup would be great.

Hi Heather,

I'll get the censuses at one point, but it seems Jean (Janet?) CALDERWOOD has died by 1850, and Robert SWAN has re-married an Amelia (Emily) WALKER. That's why no more children after James in 1849. I know you'll have most of this - just to keep it together.
Jean / Janet was as Jane in 1841 aged 30, which should mean 30 to 34yrs old.

ROBERT SWAN
JEAN CALDERWOOD
Marriage: 12 AUG 1838 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Marriage: 28 AUG 1838 Mauchline, Ayr, Scotland

ROBERT SWAN - Birth: 01 NOV 1839 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
ANN SWAN - Birth: 23 NOV 1841 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
WILLIAM SWAN - Birth: 29 AUG 1844 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
ANDREW CALDERWOOD SWAN - Birth: 11 JUL 1846 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
JAMES CALDERWOOD SWAN - Birth: 25 APR 1849 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
--
ROBERT SWAN
AMELIA WALKER
Marriage: 25 AUG 1850 Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland

There doesn't appear to be any children to Robert with Amelia in the IGI (or on the censuses either).

Hi Jack

I saw these 2 marriages and I know that the Glasgow is mine but could they have married twice or is there 4 people with the same name. Robert was born 06 March 1807 so Janet would be about the same age but maybe she came from Ayr and they had 2 wedding for the family's?

Hi Heather,

I'd guess that Jane CALDERWOOD maybe came from Mauchline (or was at least living there) when she married in 1838 as the 1841 census in Glasgow says NOT born in Lanarkshire.
The 2 dates would be when the marriage banns were read out in church (in each of their parishes). But more likely they were married in Mauchline - custom has it a marriage takes place in the bride's parish.
Just remembered that you already have Robert SWAN (with 2nd wife Emily) in 1851 & 1861 - thought they looked familiar!

Robert SWAN, 1, --------- b LKS

This birth has possibilities, BUT NO PROOF that it is your Jane / Jean. I suppose we have to remember that not all births were recorded pre 1855.
Symington is abt 8 miles NW of Mauchline.

JEAN CALDERWOOD
Birth: 15 JUN 1807 Symington, Ayr, Scotland
Father: WILLIAM CALDERWOOD
Mother: ANNE GALT

Hi Jack

I have found out that the 2 marriage dates for Robert Swan and Janet Calderwood are the same people I was down in Edinburgh and checked it out tho' I did not have time to do her death. I had so many Brick walls to knock down and I had more sucess with hubby's family than mine.

Thanks Heather,

Glad to hear both marriages are the same couple - no doubt you are too!

It's always the same at NRH - time just flies when you're enjoying yourself
