Birth 1798
Hi, I am trying to find the birth of John Millar - I believe 1798 Glasgow fathers name probably Alexander and mothers surname probably Cochrane or McCrie. If I can't find it on Scotlands people where do I go from here? I am quite new to this.

Hi Denise
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot
Can you maybe tell us how you arrived at where John Millar was born and the possible names of his parents? Did you maybe see his name on a death or marriage entry? Or perhaps you have seen him on a census?
Any info you can give us helps us to help you!
Best wishes

Hi Denise,
Welcome to Talking Scot. I found a few extracts for a birth of John Miller father Alexander in Lanarkshire in 1798 but none with the mothers maiden names you are looking for.
You can try looking for Alexander using a wild card incase it has been shortened to Alex or some other form. Or it's possible there may not be a christening entry for John Miller perhaps he wasn't registered or perhaps the entry was lost or damaged and can not be viewed. You could try your local LDS Family Search History Center and they would be able to locate the neccessary films for you if they don't already have them . This would allow you to scroll through the entries at your leasure looking for possible christenings. Perhaps you may find a sibling for John Miller instead and be able to further your tree by moving sideways. I have found this helpful when I couldn't find a record of birth. Just an idea, if you know that John Miller lived past 1955 you could check his death cert for parents names which may narrow down your search.
Happy Hunting,
HeatherH

Hi, John Millar became a Reverend and moved to County Antrim Northern Ireland. I have a good history of him from there on. Someone had looked in the Fasti of Ministers for Scotland but couldn't find him. Then someone at the Linen Hall Library found him in the Irish Fasti which stated that he was born in Glasgow and went to the Theological Halls (A.B.) in Glasgow. I have asked someone to look again in the Scottish fasti as I think I might have asked for the timescale. The reason I think the names are Alexander and surname Cochrane or McCrie is from naming patterns which seems as good a reason as any rather than just seeing a name on Scotlands people with the date and thinking well that must be them. I have seen a Alexander married to a Janet Wallce but his occupation was listed as a weaver and I wasn't sure if a weavers son would become a minister. I have looked for a sibling but no luck.
Heather if he lived past 1955 he would have done very well - think you mean 1855. They do not have the record available for the year he died in Ireland. Thanks both for your interest.

Sometimes the Fasti gives parent and spouse details, if known. Did he perhaps marry in Scotland before he went to Ireland? Who did he marry?Did he have any children in Scotland? If not, where were his children born?someone at the Linen Hall Library found him in the Irish Fasti which stated that he was born in Glasgow and went to the Theological Halls (A.B.) in Glasgow
Best wishes
