Help deciphering Closeburn place name.....

Post by burnbanks » Wed Mar 21, 2007 5:47 pm

I've got Isoble, baptised to William Hamilton and Mary Alexander in ? ?
Looks like 'new office'
Any ideas? Thanks
The word(s) also appear near the top of the sheet. I've underlined them in the image at:

Actually, it looks more like Mess Office to me. Did they work in or have anything to do with Closeburn Castle?

go to http://www.scotsorigins.com/ and have a play with putting in various fragments to see what matches turn up, - look for a match by county and parish.

A warm welcome to TalkingScot, Burnbanks!

I'm not sure what it says. I thought it was Manse Office, but the initial letter is different from the M in Mary, Margaret, Monteath, so that's questionable.

I did notice that the same initial letter appears in the line above the first underlined example - Mary Ferris in ____?. The same initial letter is used in the record for Adam Thomson and Agnes Monteath's son John _____?

Not much help, I'm afraid, but others will offer their assistance soon.

Hi all
There is a surname further down the page which seems to start with the same letter - I think the surname looks like Howison ... or is it Morrison?
There are other Hs & Ms on the page which do not follow that style though...
Mint office?
Did they make money in Closeburn?
(no witty answers to that one please....! )
Best wishes
Lesley

Sorry to go off subject - but you don't have a James Hamilton born in Closeburn around 1800 do you? He married Jane Waugh, who I believe may have been a cousin.

Hi All

Could it be "in mine office" the writing appears to indicate that is the word.

Haven't a clue what it is but I think it's all one word.
I've had a scout around an old map but can't see anything obvious.

I think the first letter's an N , cos it looks similar to the N in Nether Mains.

So I end up reading it as New Office or New Offue , but it disnae make any sense to me .

You could try www.old-maps.co.uk could take hours to find it, but this approach has worked for me more often than not in the past.

Good luck

Sally

It doesn't really seem like it starts with an 'M'.
Could it be an 'N' ?
See Agness NIVISON's surname (4th entry up - on 22nd).
Unfortunately there isn't too much to compare on this page 55.
A look at the pages before and after on the original film may help.
Still haven't a clue where Isoble was born though! Newoffice?

ps, Ah, you've thought an 'N' too Sally! :D
There is a place named Manufactory just SE of Thornhill.
Could this be where the limestone in the area was processed?
Would they need an office? A New one?
