Sasines
I was at NAS earlier today to look at some sasine records, and was told that in a couple of weeks time the indices will not be available for consultation, as they have been put onto a new website that will be going online. Apparently this will make it easier to find what you are looking for - after trying to use them for the first time today, it couldn't be much harder!!! lol
It sounds like good news though - some of the volumes I saw today were literally falling to bits.

Hi Chris
The Sasine Records will be going online
That is great news.
Do you have any idea of the name of the site?

Hi Sheila,
I have no idea, and I wasn't a hundred per cent sure whether it was just the indices or the abridgements themselves. The member of staff showing me through them has only recently started herself, but it all seems quite imminent.

Hi Chris
I expect we may soon find out!
(and I'd better be quick getting through there before they disappear... I have things on my list!!
)
Best wishes
Lesley
Under the stairs at NAS being one of my favourite places to spend a morning, I'm a bit worried by this one! I had heard about the project from a member of staff at NAS but I was given the impression that these being available as digital files was still a long way off - they had just, I think, covered Edinburgh area last time I heard which was just a few months ago. Maybe they have been working flat out on it though! I'm sure I was told it would be the indices, not copies of the originals. The indices can be very useful though and give a good summary of the persons and places involved. I rather suspect that the sasine area may be closed partly so that more digitisation of the indices can take place, but also because of the building work and reorganisiation of the areas of the building - all the sasine stuff and related volumes are to move to another area of the building....and was told that in a couple of weeks time the indices will not be available for consultation, as they have been put onto a new website that will be going online.
I expect we may soon find out!
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
Yes I was told that the area would be closed off at some point. I have to say though, the condition of the books was appalling (I was looking at the books for Aberdeenshire), when I say falling to bits I literally do mean falling to bits, with some of the books tied together with bits of cord to keep them intact when slotted back into the shelves, so I personally think it is good news. I'm sure the books will still be made available for any queries, but hopefully this will extend their lives somewhat.
