brick wall.....

Post by thomsos » Mon Apr 16, 2007 4:37 pm

Actually just one of my brick walls ](*,)

I am trying to find a birth and marriage for a Thomas Wason from Ayrshire.
I have his dc, but can’t find anything else and would appreciate any help.
This is what I already have on him:-

He was a coal miner married to Catherine Downie, his parent were Alexander Wason and Elizabeth Craig, he died in Dailly, Ayr, 1874 age 73
In the 1841 census he was in Dailly with Catherine, both age 40 and born Ayrshire, and 6 Children the eldest being 13.

I have used quite a few credits on SP with no success, so would appreciate any help or suggestions I can get.

Sandra

Not having a lot of luck on the BIVRI or IGI with this one, but did find a Thomas WaTson birth in 1795, in Dailly and his spouse was named as Catherine Downie (submitted entry!), but did get some children on the BIVRI...

Children of: Thomas WASSON & Catharine DOWNIE

WASSON, Thomas 7 Mar 1836 Dailly, Ayr, Scotland
WASSON, Elizabeth 28 Jun 1827 Christening Date: 7 Aug 1827 Muirkirk, Ayrshire, Scotland
WASSON, Alexander 29 Mar 1829 Dailly, Ayr, Scotland
WASSON, Mary Ann 19 Jul 1831 Dailly, Ayr, Scotland
WASSON, Margaret 3 Oct 1833 Dailly, Ayr, Scotland
WASSON, Thomas 7 Mar 1836 Dailly, Ayr, Scotland
WASSON, William Chalmers 2 Jul 1841 Christening Date: 18 Jul 1841 Dailly, Ayrshire, Scotland

You might have to be a bit imaginative with the wildcards.

Yes this is Thomas and Family,
I Have tried quite a few wild cards.
On IGI there is a Thomas Watson born Sept. 1800 to Alexander Watson and Helen Craig, but his mother is Elizabeth on his DC, do you think this could be him?

I have found Alexander Watson and Elizabeth Craig's MC, they were married 12/12/1799 Dailly, and on SP there is a Thomas born to Alex. Watson/Helen Craig in 1800, so think this is a different thomas from mine!

What was the relationship of the informant on his DC? I've seen more than a few mistakes, especially with mother's maiden names.

Probably not the same situation here, but I had a real muddle because two sisters married men who were not only cousins to each other, they had the same names! Because the OPR's didn't give parent names on the MC I have yet to figure out which man belongs to which set of parents!

His son John Wason was the informant on his dc.

 Just a thought, Alexander's mothers name was HELEN, do you think it may be possible that there has been a mistake, and Thomas's grandmothers name has been recorded as his mother instead of Elizabeth

Hi Possible Cousin !!

As someone with WASON roots in Dailly and Colmonell, we may well have a connection; but, for the moment, I don't have the time available to look into this situation in full detail.

My Girvan WASON line goes back to Dailly and Colmonell, via spelling variations such as WAWSON, and others, to WATSON, - which could be a perfect example of the West of Scotland "glottal stop", which could well have led to WATSON being "heard" as WAWSON, WASON, and other variants....................

I have found this in a register in Staffordshire - the thought is that the preacher asks the father "Mother's name" and instead of giving the name of the mother of the baby, he gives his own mother's name. Quite possible I would think.
