Where Else for pre-1800 Information

Today I was playing about on SP tracing a line back to the mid 1600s and it got me thinking. Is all that we can get on people from this time just names, dates and places? Is there not more we can find?

I noticed that one some of the OPRs had no occupations on them so you cannot piece together what they did during their life. I guess you can get the jist of the area from statistical accounts but they don't go into detail of individuals which is a problem. However if it says most of the parish were coal miners then the most of the commoners were probably coal miners.

So really my question is what else is there to consult for periods before 1800s?

So really my question is what else is there to consult for periods before 1800s?
A search of the NAS catalogue and the catalogues of local archives might show some sources that may have some info for the area. It can take a fair bit of time to trawl through the various sources that just might have a mention. There are many, many records which may have a mention of the folk you are looking for such as the various taxes, guildry records, Kirk session, court records, testaments, deeds and many, many more..... a look at a book such as Rosemanry Bigwood's "The Scottish Family Tree Dectective" would give you some ideas, I'm sure!

I had a look on the NAS website but it is so hard to find people when you cant search both place and name.

I was thinking more in terms of something like a book on local history published in the 1600s of an area and it mentions Joe son of Joey known in this parish for being a spooky fellow, kind of thing. If that makes sense. :roll:

The sources Lesley mentioned are all good sources. I've never had the opportunity to look through Kirk sessions but that is something I look forward to one day. I'd imagine as long as you know the parish they were living in at the time then there is a chance of finding something in there.

As for the spooks, I'd run a mile too.

Seriously though that would make me listen and maybe even make me believe, a bit, if a spiritualist was able to provide information. It would certainly help ease the frustration alot of genealogist experience. If only it were that easy. :D
