William Rodger, Where is he ?

Post by darylrodger » Mon Jun 18, 2007 10:24 pm

Hi,

I was hoping someone out there could help me with finding an ancestor of my hubby's.

William Rodger died on Sept 29th 1880, at 344 Crown St, Gorbals, aged 82. According to the death certificate his parents were William (a farmer) & Mary nee Rodger. I've tried to find him without success. Any ideas ?

Thanks,

Daryl

Hi Daryl

He and Janet were married in April 1831 in Airdrie or New Monkland and he is stated as coming from the Parish of Old Monkland so though he may not have been born there at least it's a start and you know from his DC that he had a son called James.

I would say that there is a likely family in the 1841 census in Old Monkland at the Calder Bank Iron Works consisting of

William Rodger aged 40 Labourer born Lanarkshire
Janet Rodger aged 30 born Lanarkshire
Janet Rodger aged 9 born Lanarkshire
William Rodger aged 3 born Lanarkshire
James Rodger aged 1 born Lanarkshire

I will say in all truth that I cannot find a birth for him nor a marriage for his parents. However the family is there again in 1851 (though not findable on Ancestry!).

They are at 45 Stone Row, Old Monkland. William's birthplace is given as Bothwell and Janet is already dead. The family appears as before tho young Janet is now Jane and there is an addition of a 7 year old John. Poor young James aged only 11 is a cow herd. Nice to think of cows roaming Coatbridge is it not!!

Sadly this may just be as good as it gets for info on William's origins.

There is a Mary Rodger in the 1841 census for Airdrie aged 80 but she is with a Christina Hill who is the daughter of John Rodger. Farmer and Yarn Merchant and Mary ms. Anderson. So she must be a Mary Anderson and not a Mary Rodger.

Fraid that's the best I can do.

Anne

Cows roaming around Coatbridge

The other day I was looking at the 1881 census CD's for New Monkland/Shotts I think, and decided to look at the neighbours to see if there were any familiar names. I was suprised at the number of farms around the place and not to far from my lang deid yins. Not far in respect that they were classed as neighbours in the census.
Oh and I did find a name that looks promising too :D and not that far away.
