James Fergusson married Rosina McHarvie Wasson (Watson) 1837 Dailly.
On the 1841 census they are together with one child, Robert.
Anthony McLellan Fergusson was born to
James Fergusson/Jean Aitken 10 Aug 1846 Colmonell, Ayrshire
On the 1851 census James is with Robert 11, Elizabeth 8 and his mother Mary McLellan. We must assume that Rosina has died, and wee Anthony has been farmed out to grandparents at Ballantrae.
I can find neither a marriage for James/Jean or a death record for Jean Aitken after 1855.
Presumably they were not married and possibly Jean Aitken died.
However, when son Anthony marries in 1866 Auchinleck the parents are now listed as James Ferguson/Agnes Aitken, presumably a relation.
Once again James was not married to Agnes.
I have no idea where Jean or Agnes Aitken were born and am hopeful that perhaps some light can be shone on this conundrum.

I wouldn't be too worried about the changing christian names. If his Mother died when he was young he may not have been sure of it.She may also have been Jean but known as Agnes.
My GGGGrandfather's Mother died when he was about 4 or 5.On his first marriage he gives the correct name but on his 2nd marriage he gives his Grandmother who helped his Father to raise him as his Mother. On his death it's his step-mother's name which is there-despite the fact he was out of the house by the time they married but I guess that's who his son knew as his Granny!
