I have the above birth 21 Jan 1809 in Kirkliston West Lothian. MALE. Parents Andrew Neil and Jant(sic) Gilbert
When I found it some months ago I thought Magdalene was a strange middle name for a boy. However I put it to one side as he is the brother of my ggg grandfather.
Football is back on the TV now..........good excuse to spend time on the family history............... so I am looking at some side lines of my tree and came across this one again.
My question is could "Male" be a mistake and could I, in fact, be looking for a female?
Am I clutching at straws?
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,
Francis is usually male, and Frances female, so by implication this character should be male. However, Magdalene as a middle name does throw in some serious doubts.
Have you had a look at the OPR on SP (or on microfilm somewhere) to see if Francis is listed as son of, or daughter of... ?
All the best,

Bit of a conundrum that, Jean
My late husband was born Catholic and, of the very little of his ancestry we have uncovered, at least two males have the female saint name Maria as a middle name.
According to my sister-in-law this wasn't ususual.
Maybe Francis was a boy?
Having done little more than confuse the issue
, I shall quietly slope off

Hi Andrew and Mary
ITS A GIRL
I found a marriage between Frances Niel(sic) and Joseph West in Uphall in 1827.
Found them in 1851 living in Linlithgow. First daughter was called Janet(after Frances's mother) Second son was called Andrew (after Frances's father)
Found her d.c. in 1876 in Linlithgow. No doubt about it, her full name of Frances Magdalen Stewart West m.s. Neil is there

Best wishes
Jean
