Non Established Church Records

Post by maggiehill » Thu Aug 23, 2007 7:44 pm

Where are the non estabished church records/religious denominations to be found in Edinburgh or Glasgow. The SP OPR Index covers the Established Church records only. I have seen posts in the past but cannot find them now.

We are coming home next week I would like to trace some of my early Turley family.

This site deals with accessing Roman Catholic Church records - http://www.catholic-heritage.net/sca/index.htm

There will be other info to follow from other TS members.

Hi
Many of the other Church records are held at NAS. e.g there is much Free Church material in CH3, Quakers in CH10, Methodists in CH11, Episcopal Church in CH12 & etc. Best thing is to check the online catalogue and contact them in advance to check that anything you particulalry want to see is there on the day. Some items are held in storage and need to be ordered a couple of days in advance.

What particular Church were you interested in?
Best wishes
Lesley

There are also a few registers held at the archive in the Mitchell Library in Glasgow - see Diane Baptie's "Registers of the Secession Churches in Scotland" for a full listing.

Thanks Everyone,

I believe I need to look at the Catholic Records. I cannot find any information on my Turley family, gggrandfather was Andrew Turley on his 1877 death cert his father was Stephen Turley and Mother was Agnes Logan.

Andrew Turley married Agnes Pollock in May or September 1843 according to there daughters birth certs.

On early census's the family came from came from Airdrie.

I am assuming that they originated from Ireland but my mother did say that they may have come from Cornwall ex tin miners.

Hi Maggie,

I have previously researched with the Airdrie and Coatbridge (next door to Airdrie) Roman Catholic records, copies of which are held at NAS in Edinburgh.

The accession numbers are:

Coatbridge
Baptisms 1851 – 1881 RH21/3/1
Marriages 1847 – 1952 RH21/3/2

[2 vols births – 1851 – 1866; 1867 – 1881]
[2 vols marriages – 1847 – 1898; 1899 – 1952]

Airdrie
Baptisms 1839 – 1852 RH21/1/1
Baptisms 1852 – 1865 RH21/1/2
Marriages 1842 – 1855 RH21/1/3

An example of an Airdrie baptism is:

1842 (RH21/1/1 p.32)

Susanna, lawful, Michael Mundy & Grace Kerr, born May 2, baptised May 8, sponsors John Ferns & Nancy Kerr – Father Gerald O’ Byrne

A marriage record looks like:

Feb 7th 1842 (RH21/1/3)

Chas. Laughry & Cath Mundy

Chas Laughry Co. Antrim & Cath Mundy (ditto), after due proclamations of law were married by me in presence of James McFern & Mary Ann Mundy.

John M. Ryan.

I hope this helps!

Regards,

Hi Chris

I will have a look at these Roman Catholic records, we only planned to be in Edinburgh 3 days, it looks now we will go back there after our trip up north.

Is there any more news when these records will be on line.
