Thanks, Catriona, but I had already entered just the surname MAULE on Ancestry....and now realise that it is not as unusual as I had first thought.
Just less common.
I had also contacted the Guild of One-Name Studies for another less common, MCILWRICK, and have corresponded several times with the group administrator in Edinburgh. Unfortunately, although he already knew of my Margaret he had made no further connection.
But I suppose having reached 1718 this may well be my brickwall.....however not the end of my research.
